The 11th Frame: USBC will keep static weight rules
Anyone who bowls seriously or follows bowling seriously knows that static weight (within the rules) means essentially nothing in ball motion these days.
I've attached the PDF of the USBC ball motion study of a few years back to this story for anyone wanting to go over the results again.
I was among many that wondered why USBC just didn't junk its static weight rules. USBC said it was because it wanted to do more testing when Earl — its new robot — came online.
The results of those tests are in and it turns out static weight can have a significant impact on ball motion — at levels well beyond the current rules.
That means the static weight rules won't be eliminated, USBC announced this week.

The bottom line is that the tests showed that the typical three-phase motion of a ball going down a lane — skid, hook, and then roll — can become four phases, with that fourth phase being unpredictable and likely not to a bowler's benefit.
"Our research showed that bowling balls with more than the USBC-allowed amount of static weights will skid, hook, roll, then either start to hook again or fade away from the pocket," USBC mMnaging Director of National Governing Body Neil Stremmel said in the release. "That type of motion would hinder bowlers and pro shop operators because bowling balls would not have appropriate entry angle into the pins and bowlers would not know how their bowling balls would react.
"While static weights do have a minimal effect on bowling ball motion within the current window, our research data and analysis shows that having no limit can have a negative effect on ball motion. Therefore USBC will not change the specification."
In other words, maintaining the rule isn't so much about preventing bowlers from gaining an advantage as it is about protecting bowlers from wacky-weighted balls that would cause erratic motion.
Stremmel emailed me a short video snippet of a ball thrown by Earl that actually had normal ball motion until the back-end when it hilariously backed up into the 6-10.

That could come in handy with trick shots! Stremmel also noted that extreme imbalance meant that the balls would not go through a ball return without hopping off the track, so they had to be returned by hand during the tests.
