A taste of North Carolina

This is the second year these two North Carolina companies have teamed to produce this limited-edition treat. This year, the companies are debuting the doughnut in Tennessee and Roanoke, Va., in addition to the Carolinas. Business reporter Laura Oleniacz sampled the doughnut when it came out last year this same time, but most colleagues had not tasted the Cheerwine doughnut. So we stopped pestering public officials and other sources for a few minutes (groans) and did an informal taste test -- all with the goal of better informing readers about this melding of two North Carolina tastes. (Can eating Krispy Kreme and drinking Cheerwine be considered a form of support for sustainable agriculture? Rationalization helps -- and works.) Editorial Page Editor Elizabeth O'Donovan's experience began with a little trepidation. "Do you know how many calories are in this thing?" she wrote. Once she tasted a bit of the cream filling, she was on her way to being sold. She described the sweetness as "excruciating, and yet every neural receptor in my brain just lit up. Oh, no. I can't decide if I want to like this or not, or if I do like this." Dan Way, editor of The Chapel Hill Herald, who hails from Pennsylvania, sounded like a true Tar Heel in his critique: "Not since the advent of the chocolate-covered strawberry has the rich flavor of chocolate been put to such savory use in combination with a fruity-flavored delight as the Cheerwine cream filling inside the Krispy Kreme doughnut. Damn the calories! Pass the box back around." Others were a tad more moderate in their praise. Higher education reporter Neil Offen wrote, "The two actually go pretty well together -- the doughnuts with their frosting are incredibly sweet, and so is the Cheerwine filling. The light pink color of the filling isn't very appetizing and the crème could be thicker, but it does what a filled doughnut should do.
