Russell Simmons brings his men's jewelry line to Kay Jewelers at Great Lakes Mall
Russell Simmons kept on hammering the talking points during a 20-minute interview about his new line of jewelry.
"There's nothing subtle about it," said the hip-hop fashion mogul, via phone from his New York office.
I think he meant the jewelry. But he could've also been referring to his spiel.
Which is all the same, because Simmons is intent on bringing a new brand and a new attitude to the mall.
At 5 p.m. Thursday, he will appear at Kay Jewelers in Great Lakes Mall in Mentor to talk about his new line of jewelry and explain the message he wants to send with it.
"There is a huge hole in the market when it comes to jewelry," said Simmons, founder of Def Jam Records and the Phat Farm fashion line. "Especially in the malls, where you can't even find a store that serves men."
Simmons is setting his sights on that underserved market by mixing stainless steel with rubber and diamonds to create masculine necklaces, bracelets and rings.
The whole masculine pitch is an attempt to address a stigma that has made men not named Liberace apprehensive about donning jewelry.
"That's why I'm going masculine with my line," said Simmons. "I want men to feel confident and strong and make a bold statement about their personal strength and self-confidence."
In other words, "know your strength."
More than a marketing tag, Simmons sees it as part of a cultural movement that transcends gender and race.
"It's all about integrating people into this post-racial America," he said. "Where the gatekeepers of society break down and we aspire to this union and this American dream."
He points to hip-hop as the battering ram that busted down the gates.
"People of all walks grew up on it, from the urban graduate to people of all races," said Simmons, who pioneered the preppy hip-hop line ArgyleCulture. "Look at President Obama, he's hip-hop the way he gives the hello sign."
Of course, Simmons' view of hip-hop differs from some: It's the music of the street aspiring to make it to the boardroom.
