To help fight against the sale of cards down, American Greetings has created JustWink, a greeting card application that enables users to free iPhone and Android send free personalized greeting to anyone in their social networks almost as rapidly as someone posts that they are engaged or expect.
Having this capability on a mobile application means "you can be at the airport and say, 'Oh, shoot! I forgot to send someone a birthday card!"And do it right there," said Alison Heiser, a strategic marketing consultant with Alison Heiser Associates in Neenah, Wisconsin, she said winning the app the first time she attempted Thursday.
His main rival, Hallmark Cards Inc. of Kansas City, Missouri, attempted to entice consumers with cards that allow consumers to karaoke singing, cards containing gift cards for retailers and recordable history books, according to Mintel Group Ltd.., a leading market research company.
Both companies are trying to reverse the fact that sales of greeting cards declined by about 9 percent from 2005 to 2010, "and the decline is expected to continue until 2015," said Mintel.

At the same time, while the number of people who purchased greeting cards in the last three months slipped from 59 percent in 2009 to 52 percent in 2010, the number of people sending e-cards has remained stable over the past four years.
Curiously, those who send paper greeting cards are also "much more likely to have sent e-cards, and vice versa, indicating that the two are not mutually exclusive," said Mintel.
